New York State income tax ranges from 3.9% to 10.9% in 2026, after rate cuts for the lower and middle brackets. New York City residents also pay city income tax, withheld from every paycheck. Two small deductions apply to most private-sector workers statewide: Paid Family Leave (0.432% of wages, up to $411.91 a year) and disability insurance (up to $0.60 a week). On top of state deductions, every worker pays federal income tax (based on your W-4), Social Security at 6.2%, and Medicare at 1.45%. For a single worker earning $25 an hour full time, total deductions come to about 20% of gross pay.
New York's minimum wage is $17.00 per hour in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County, and $16.00 in the rest of the state for 2026. From 2027, both rates rise each year with inflation.
New York follows the 40-hour workweek: non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40. Minimum-wage workers whose workday spans more than 10 hours, including breaks, are owed one extra hour at the minimum wage ("spread of hours" pay). Enter your weekly overtime hours in the calculator to include them. Under the federal "no tax on overtime" rule for 2025–2028, you may be able to deduct up to $12,500 of the extra half of your overtime pay ($25,000 if married filing jointly) on your federal return. That deduction is claimed when you file, so it does not lower the withholding shown here unless you adjust your W-4.
NYC residents pay city income tax at rates from about 3.1% to 3.9% on their tax returns. Paycheck withholding follows the state's NYC withholding tables. Turn on "NYC resident" in the calculator to include it. It depends on where you live, not where you work: someone who commutes into Manhattan from New Jersey or Westchester does not pay NYC income tax.
PFL is New York Paid Family Leave. In 2026, 0.432% of your gross wages is deducted for it, up to a maximum of $411.91 for the year. It funds up to 12 weeks of partially paid leave to bond with a new child, care for a seriously ill family member, or handle military family needs.
Not yet. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge based on their New York State tax, and nonresidents who work in Yonkers pay a small tax on wages earned there. If either applies to you, your take-home pay will be slightly lower than the estimate shown.
It uses the official 2026 withholding formulas, so for a standard W-4 and IT-2104 allowances with no other deductions it should be within a few dollars of your actual paycheck. Your real check will be lower if you have pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums (those also reduce your income tax), or extra withholding on your W-4.
